Silent Hill F, A Deeply Emotional and Unique Chapter in the Silent Hill Franchise

Image
Wilson Barnett | Former Associate Editor  The Silent Hill franchise has been making a massive comeback in the last year. We got the Silent Hill 2 Remake last year and this year, the release date was announced for the film Return to Silent Hill, a remake of the original 1999 game, and the release of Silent Hill F. This game has earned the title for being one of the most standout additions to the franchise for its evolved combat, folklore, and Japanese location.  You are Hinako Shimizu, a teenage girl in 1960s Japan whose town is overcome with an infectious curse. Everyone disappears, except for a small group of people in Hinako’s life, spider lilies bloom everywhere, and a looming presence has its eyes set on the girl. You can often find yourself between dimensions battling terrifying creatures. The two central locations you will venture through are Ebisugaoka and the Dark Shrine, presenting barrages of twisted enemies around each corner. This game is very different from previo...

Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater Revitalizes Konami's Most Beloved Franchise, Paves the Way for the Future

Image
Jake Wilkinson | Staff Writer Metal Gear Solid changed the gaming landscape when it was released back in 1998. Alongside legendary entries like Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Metal Gear Solid solidified itself as one of gaming's greatest achievements. Showcasing a new form of storytelling on the PlayStation when it was first released, it showed what video games could be in the future.  Hideo Kojima’s masterpiece was then followed by Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, which ventured into ideas previously unknown at the time of its 2001 release but have become far more prevalent in today’s ever-changing media landscape. The rise of artificial intelligence, information control, and what to pass on to our children has only recently come into the public's mind and has only grown more alarming as 2025 has progressed.  However, no title Kojima or his former partner Konami Digital Entertainment has ever loomed as large as Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Konami fin...

The Outlast Trials, A Lesson on American History With a Twist

Image
Wilson Barnett | Former Associate Editor In a post-World War II American society falling into the Cold War, tensions were high for the American government. How far was our government willing to go to secure victory against the Soviets? In The Outlast Trials, MKUltra is taken to an extreme in a co-op survival horror experience like no other. The Outlast Trials is the fourth installment of the Outlast game franchise, created by Motreal-based studio Red Barrels , fully released on March 5, 2024. It serves as a prequel to the previous games, taking place in the late 1950s through the early 1960s. It’s not a game for the faint of heart. There are many disturbing themes and grotesque scenes, which is what the series is known for. The grueling visuals on top of stressful missions in labyrinthian maps makes for an intense playthrough.   You play as a Reagent, an unhoused person kidnapped under the guise of charity by the Murkoff Corporation and sent to the Arizona Sinyala Facility f...

Wilson Barnett | Former Associate Editor What would you do if you were stranded in space after a terrible accident, leaving you on a meteor with depleting resources, sanity, and an endless supply of mouthwash? What if it wasn’t an accident? This is the terror that Mouthwashing encapsules. Mouthwashing is an indie psychological horror game released on September 26th 2024, developed by Wrong Organ, an indie studio based in Sweden. Following the game’s release across multiple platforms, it gained a cult following almost immediately. With a recent collaboration with toy company Youtooz and cosplays galore, it’s difficult to ignore its popularity. Mouthwashing bounces between the perspectives of Curly and Jimmy, two of the five members aboard the Tulpar cargo ship before and after crashing onto an unknown meteor. As the events of the game unfold, we learn disturbing details about what happened prior to the crash. The farther along the game goes, the further into insanity the crew plunges....
