Donkey Kong Bananza breaks new ground for Nintendo platformers

Image
Jake Wilkinson | Staff Writer Nintendo has always been ahead in the video game industry, from the invention of the platforming genre with 1985’s Super Mario Bros. to 2017’s The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild, they have pushed the envelope in innovation and fun. The release of the Nintendo Switch 2 console has not only brought back the iconic Mario Kart series, but has also made one of their most groundbreaking platforming adventures in Donkey Kong Bananza.  Donkey Kong Bananza is the first 3D Donkey Kong platformer since 1999’s Nintendo 64 title Donkey Kong 64. It follows Nintendo’s beloved ape on a subterranean adventure to get back his one and only desire: bananas. When the wicked Void Company strikes the heart of Ingot Isle with a meteor, the titular DK, alongside a talented young singer named Pauline, is sent on an epic quest to smash everything on the way to the planet's core to grant one wish for both Pauline and DK. While Nintendo has not often thrived on storytelling, ...

Project Invasion Dramatically Changes The Outlast Trials Formula

Image
Wilson Barnett | Former Associate Editor  With Halloween right around the corner, Red Barrels has released a major update alongside its annual Halloween event for The Outlast Trials. The update not only brings back the thrilling Halloween event but also a brand new PvP mode for Reagents to be on either side of the coin.   Project Invasion     Invasion brings in an entirely new way to play for Reagents. The titular Invasion mode allows Reagents to take on the role of the Imposter Ex-Pop, one of the many kinds of enemies you’ll face within the Trial environments. In the Terminal, you can select your role and toggle Imposter accessibility for other Trials.  Invasion effectively brings a PvP mode to the game without the power balance being too thrown off. Imposters have limited time within the Trials to execute their duty. During their wait time, Imposters can watch the survivor Reagents through security cameras, ping their location, and strategize their p...

Denton Gaming Digest’s Staff Picks: The Best Games for Halloween

Image
Halloween is right around the corner, and with it comes a mix of eerie, atmospheric, and playfully spooky games returning to player’s screens. The staff at Denton Gaming Digest have rounded up their favorite titles that capture the chills, charms and creativity that make October gaming so memorable.  Juan Carlos Ramirez - Editor  Luigi’s Mansion franchise While Nintendo is not known for horror games, the Luigi's Mansion franchise is a perfect series to get into the Halloween mood. All three games in the series have aspects that make them unique and enjoyable, but the goals of each game are very similar. You play as Mario’s younger brother, armed only with a vacuum and tasked with catching ghosts and exploring a mansion. Luigi's Mansion has the player saving Mario from a haunted mansion. In Dark Moon, the second installment, the focus is shifted towards restoring the shattered Dark Moon to its former state to pacify now-hostile ghosts and end the eerie fog that has enveloped Ev...

Silent Hill F, A Deeply Emotional and Unique Chapter in the Silent Hill Franchise

Image
Wilson Barnett | Former Associate Editor  The Silent Hill franchise has been making a massive comeback in the last year. We got the Silent Hill 2 Remake last year and this year, the release date was announced for the film Return to Silent Hill, a remake of the original 1999 game, and the release of Silent Hill F. This game has earned the title for being one of the most standout additions to the franchise for its evolved combat, folklore, and Japanese location.  You are Hinako Shimizu, a teenage girl in 1960s Japan whose town is overcome with an infectious curse. Everyone disappears, except for a small group of people in Hinako’s life, spider lilies bloom everywhere, and a looming presence has its eyes set on the girl. You can often find yourself between dimensions battling terrifying creatures. The two central locations you will venture through are Ebisugaoka and the Dark Shrine, presenting barrages of twisted enemies around each corner. This game is very different from previo...

Metal Gear Solid Δ: Snake Eater Revitalizes Konami's Most Beloved Franchise, Paves the Way for the Future

Image
Jake Wilkinson | Staff Writer Metal Gear Solid changed the gaming landscape when it was released back in 1998. Alongside legendary entries like Nintendo’s The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, Metal Gear Solid solidified itself as one of gaming's greatest achievements. Showcasing a new form of storytelling on the PlayStation when it was first released, it showed what video games could be in the future.  Hideo Kojima’s masterpiece was then followed by Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty, which ventured into ideas previously unknown at the time of its 2001 release but have become far more prevalent in today’s ever-changing media landscape. The rise of artificial intelligence, information control, and what to pass on to our children has only recently come into the public's mind and has only grown more alarming as 2025 has progressed.  However, no title Kojima or his former partner Konami Digital Entertainment has ever loomed as large as Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater. Konami fin...

The Outlast Trials, A Lesson on American History With a Twist

Image
Wilson Barnett | Former Associate Editor In a post-World War II American society falling into the Cold War, tensions were high for the American government. How far was our government willing to go to secure victory against the Soviets? In The Outlast Trials, MKUltra is taken to an extreme in a co-op survival horror experience like no other. The Outlast Trials is the fourth installment of the Outlast game franchise, created by Motreal-based studio Red Barrels , fully released on March 5, 2024. It serves as a prequel to the previous games, taking place in the late 1950s through the early 1960s. It’s not a game for the faint of heart. There are many disturbing themes and grotesque scenes, which is what the series is known for. The grueling visuals on top of stressful missions in labyrinthian maps makes for an intense playthrough.   You play as a Reagent, an unhoused person kidnapped under the guise of charity by the Murkoff Corporation and sent to the Arizona Sinyala Facility f...
